Summary
An introduction to Japan's people, geography, topography, agriculture (rice, tea), and industry (textiles, steel). Highlights the dependence of Japan's modern economy on the relationship between climate and crops, and terrain and industry. Begins with a trope common to educational films on Japan from this period: a visual comparison of the contours of Japan with those of the state of California. Focuses on farming, fishing, and manufactured items (lacquered items, dolls, toys), steel, synthetic fibers, raw silk (and silk kimono). Raises the problem of sustainable agriculture in a nation with only 15% arable land.
