Curatorial Note

The “Processed by Kodak” date on the film stock is June 1963. Documented sights include restaurants, temples, and various locations across the country. Tokyo, Nikko, Toshiko, back to Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Kyoto, Nara (Deer Park), Osaka Castle, Toba, Nijo Castle, Mikimoto Pearl Island, and back to Tokyo. Highlights include the neon lights of downtown Tokyo at night. At one point, a shot of a movie theater, the narrator mentions the Walt Disney film “Lobo” (The Legend of Lobo), released in late 1962. The film ends with shots of a store window in Tokyo, with the filmmaker's reflection visible in the glass.
