Sheet Music
There are over 200 pieces of sheet music in the Re-Envisioning Japan Research Collection about Japan, inspired by Japan, or with some other relationship to Japan. These range from selections from “The Mikado” (Gilbert and Sullivan, 1885) and “The Geisha” (Sydney Jones, 1896) to World War II anti-Japanese propaganda. They include several songs celebrating Japan’s military triumphs during the Russo-Japanese War. In the spring of 2015, 46 songs in the collection were specially recorded under the direction of Dr. Philip C. Carli. Dr. Carli is a familiar figure for silent film scholars and enthusiasts, renowned worldwide for his live piano accompaniments for silent film screenings and his original scores for silent films. For the vocals he assembled colleagues and graduate students at the Eastman School of Music, including soloists Isaac Wenger, Lulu Cossich, and Peter Doyle. When you access an object in this category, you will see a grey bar above the sheet music's cover if a recording is available. Click on the arrow to the left of the bar to play the recorded song: for example, see the item "In Old Japan (1917)." The songs themselves, as well as many of the colorful covers, are fascinating examples of the extent to which Japan and the Japanese were characterized by orientalist trends in 20th century popular culture in the U.S. well into the 1930s.

Graphic Description
A "Hurry back to my bamboo shack" titled cover with a blue, orange color scheme , bamboo bordered drawing of a geisha girl wearing a traditional kimono with fan hanging on her wrist. She is overlooking the sea containing seagulls and a battleship in the distance with a smoke trail. There's an ornate bird on the top left corner of the picture. In the background drawing there's a cherry blossom tree and a flying insect, with the name of the composer, music publisher and illustrator on the bottom of the cover. There's also a hand writing of a name " Lou P Oliver".
Inside contains staff for voice and piano. The lyrics contains two verses and a chorus.
On the back side there's blue and white ink drawing of a painter sitting on a hanging board, seemingly talking to another man smoking a pipe, promoting another sheet music "If I Knock the "L" out of Kelly 'It Would Still be Kelly to Me'", Margaret Farrell's sensational song hit in "Step This Way". This music is composed by Bert Grant, with words by Sam M. Lewis & Joe Young, and is published by the same company as the music sheet.

Graphic Description
The cup's exterior is illustrated with a seated image of Jurōjin, the god of longevity, one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) in Japanese mythology. There are Japanese kanji written vertically in cursive style inside the cup. The image of a woman's head with a traditional coiffure is impressed into the bottom of the cup. This image in such cups is commonly referred to as a "Single Geisha."
Material Note
Porcelain
Color
Color or B/W
Vivid color with graphic images, Japanese kanji written in dark blue color
Curatorial Note
The relatively thick bottom of the cup tapers off toward the rim, which is thinner and more delicate (the cup flares outward). Good condition with clear and detailed graphic images and writing on the cup; the image of a woman's head on the cup's bottom (interior) is particularly clear when seen against natural light. Such Lithophane sake cups were commonly sent or brought home as souvenirs by World War II military service members, and the item could date from that era.
